Planting Grocery Store Potatoes

A check of the potato bin in the pantry revealed a few russets that were just begging me to plant them! You know I can't resist the "call of the dirt"!

I prepped the potatoes by cutting them in several pieces, each with a sprout or eye.  The cut potatoes sat for several days so the cuts could toughen over, and then into the ground they went!

Russets are an early to mid season potato, meaning that they will be ready to dig  in approximately 70 to 90 days.  The other potatoes that I planted, Red Pontiac seed potatoes, are early season and should be ready in 60 to 80 days.  I don't know how the grocery will produce, but I hope to get at least 50 lbs of potatoes from both varieties.

2 Grace Notes:

  1. I hope that you do get your 50 lbs. I thought one couldn't plant grocery store potatoes because they would produce all tops and very few potatoes?? maybe I don't know what I am talking about.

  2. 50 pounds! Wow!

Is it possible to plant potatoes in a container? I really want to try container gardening this year.
