From Paper to Cloth

We are finally making the transition from using paper towels to using cloth towels.  Paper towels were taking too big of a chunk out of my grocery budget only to be wasted.  No matter how I tried to train my two boys, they never seemed to get the hang of taking only ONE paper towel at a time!

In the bathroom, I bought a bunch of $0.97 hand towels from Stuffmart as an experiment.  I figured since they were so cheap, they might not last long, but they could buy me some time until I came up with a long-term alternative.  The great news is that they are working out great!  I may swap out towels 2-3 times a day( we wash our hands often because of leukemia), but because the towels were inexpensive, I have a good supply.
Our cloth napkins dry very quickly on the line - no extra energy needed.

In the kitchen, I bought some waffle weave dishcloths to use as cloth napkins/paper towels.  I keep them in a basket for everyone to grab as needed.  My kitchen cleaning towels are a different color and style, so they don't get mixed up.

The towels, since they are fairly small, don't add up to much more laundry work.  I dry all of our towels on the line, so we're not using more energy either.

My plan was to keep a few rolls of paper towels on hand for guests.  During the holidays, our Christmas guests insisted on using the cloth towels as well.  Sweet!   Everyone had taken to using cloth very well.  So well in fact, that I regret not making the switch sooner!

6 Grace Notes:

  1. I just made a bunch of cloth napkins a few weeks ago. The few we had kicking around had gotten frayed beyond being useful. As someone who loved using cloth diapers, I really like the idea of using as much cloth around the house as possible. We do keep paper towels on hand for jobs like cleaning the toilet and so on.

I know of some families who use cloth TP and I think that is pretty neat, too.

  3. I have a bunch of cloth napkins... decided I went through tooo many napkins (paper) years ago. I've been waiting for these snowflake ones (got on clearance at Christmas time) with silver hard threads to wear out... and they won't! LOL! I like yours... nice patterns... just washcloths, right? I love them, don't even miss the paper ones... really!

  5. Yes! I started using cloth napkins when I had guest over one Sabbath and had no papertowels or napkins in the house...SO EMBARRASSED! Needless to say, I went out and bought a bunch of cloth napkins and it has been a blessing since.

I am going to have to switch up in the kitchen and use cloth after reading this.
