November/December in the Garden

Believe it or not, we still have a few things going in our winter garden. Hubby's persimmon tree has given us some tasty fruit.

We've got lots of swiss chard, which I use instead of spinach, which I can't seem to grow at all.

I love kale!  It takes a bit of time to grow from seed, but it's worth the wait!

We still have peppers!  I've put them in an improvised greenhouse and we'll see if I can keep them alive this winter.

I'm not a fan of turnips, but they are so easy to grow.  Good thing my mom (and the chickens) like them!

The battle with the moles rages on.  I had a lovely collard plant where this hole now sits.  I don't want to put poison in my garden , so I try to flood them out of the garden and onto the lawn where I can use "stronger" means to eradicate them .

4 Grace Notes:

  1. If I may ask, how do you know a persimmon is ripe? I've been wanting to try one from the store but have no idea what they are supposed to look/feel/smell like. They're expensive so I don't want to get a bad one! :)

  2. A beautiful garden! God's faithfulness growing even in this damaged world. May he feed your soul even as he feeds your body.

  3. Cassandra, I picked the persimmons today. They were just a tiny bit soft around the stem area, but still firm everywhere else. Kinda like an avocado that's firm, but is just starting to have some "give". I hope that helps.

  4. Beautiful growing things! I have just tried growing Kale for the very first time. Still have some out in the garden here in Tennessee. Need to get out there and pick it!
