My sister and her husband flew in from GA to spend the holiday weekend with us. She brought a pint of chestnuts so we could try our hand at roasting them, just like the song says. We washed and cut Xs in the flat side so to allow them to open as they roasted. The container that the chestnuts came in said to roast them in the oven, but fire-roasting sounded like more fun.
We made a jolly, smoky mess! The first batch caught fire and burnt to a crisp. We lined the rack with foil and successfully roasted the second batch. The roasted chestnuts were very mild in taste and kinda beany in texture. I doubt we'll ever roast chestnuts again, but our attempts made for some good laughs.
PS- see that cake in the background? My mom makes delicious vegan desserts, that is a carob German Chocolate Cake.
I've never seen people roast chestnuts! I've only heard reference to it in the Christmas song.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a yummy cake!
Dear Ann,
ReplyDeleteI just found out a dear friend of mine is on the same journey as you with her little boy. She was a teacher too, and an SM with me back in college. I thought you would want to know her. She lives near Loma Linda. http://www.joyfulmountainsong.blogspot.com
Thanks for the info, Barbara. How heartbreaking to think of other children fighting the same leukemia battle!
