We're attempting home improvement on a non-existent budget. No debt allowed, so each stage of the work has to be saved up for. It has taken us five years, but we've finally put in a dishwasher. Dishwashers are not expensive compared to other home improvement projects, but other priorities put a dishwasher pretty low on the list.
We bought the dishwasher and Hard-Working-Hero decided that he would put it in. This was a pretty big deal considering that neither of us have any real construction skills or experience. Okay, HWH did build me a chicken coop, so I guess his skills are more advanced than mine. We watched several videos on the web and asked a ton of questions at home improvement stores.
With a few new additions to HWH's tool chest, we started making a mess. It only took us a two weeks to get it in, which was not bad considering we only worked an hour or so each evening and we had a few interruptions and plumbing questions to figure out. All that's left now is some trim and painting.
If you look at the corner of the counter, you can guess what our next project will be after we save some money: new countertops. Nothing fancy like granite, just something simple.
These cabinets were handmade by the original owners. They may look a bit too handmade in some ways, but these cabinets are solid and VERY hard to take apart!
After 5 years of washing dishes by hand, it is nice to finally have a choice. I must admit, I still wash some dishes by hand. I use my grandmother's stainless steel cookware from the 60's on a daily basis and I don't want the heat of the dishwasher to ruin the handles.A few more cosmetic details and some paint and then we can move on to counter tops, and molding on top of the cabinets, and new faucet, and....

Oh, Ann!! It is absolutely wonderful!! I love reading about others and their home projects! I have learned that the only way to learn how to do something is to tackle it yourself. One of the benefits is you get to enjoy the fact that YOU did it instead of someone else! In our new home we finally have a dishwasher also after 3 years, it saves so much time for our family. So even though I could have done with out, and overall it was low on the priority list, for each day it does make a huge difference. Enjoy!
Awesome!! My husband and I are not so good with house remodeling either. We've botched up a few things, but thankfully my dad and his dad have been willing to help us out on all of our big projects.

What a blessing and such lil' helper you have! I still handwash also. I think it's just hereditary. My mom made us wash by hand and use the dishwasher on weekends only so I pass on the same tradition I guess. Hee Hee. Some habits are just hard to break. Enjoy your blessing!
I love that you call your husband Hard Working Hero! It is so true and so nice to see others up lift their husbands and show their husbands the love and respect that they so desire!
Ahhh....those home improvement projects! They can be a handful! But it sure looks like you were successful. Congratulations... at homeschooling...yourself:)
What a great job! I washed dishes by hand for 3 years in an old farmhouse in Oklahoma~we did have a dishwasher but our water was so bad it was as if we didn't wash them at all. We didn't cook with the water or drink it either:0)
I was always thankful for a window over over my sink.
Everyone looks very pleased with the new dishwasher! Be sure and tell if you think of any more ways the new saw can be used:)
If that stainless steel cookware is Revere Ware, I wash that all the time in the dishwasher, including the skillet that is from the 50's or 60's. Of course, often I wash the cookware by hand because it is big and it isn't very dirty.
Also, you could look at Home Depot or another home supply store to see if there is a prefab laminate countertop where the hole for the sink can be cut out with that new saw. If you can find one, you won't have to save very long, as they are cheap!
